Last Sunday I talked about food. About the guilty pleasures we all have, and whether we should avoid them or not. As I said, there is no such thing as a ‘bad’ food, or a ‘bad’ diet. In my opinion, the health issues our society face today are a result of lack of self-awareness and knowledge.
You would be surprised how many people can’t tell the difference between hunger, thirst, boredom, feeling emotional. Or how many people can’t read a Nutritional Value Chart. And most shockingly, how many people are unaware that without proper bodily fuel their body simply cannot function properly!
Whether you eat to live or live to eat, if you don’t consume the proper amount of nutrients in your diet you are robbing yourself from feeling alive and having the ability to live life to the fullest. Being in Colombia has reminded me how many people truly just do not know how to eat! Even if you go to a ‘healthy’ restaurant the portions are so off. The salad consists of mostly fruits. The meat portion is bigger than my head, and the carbohydrates consist of High GI (Glycemic Index) foods. Which means they are low in fiber, healthy fats, and can increase blood glucose if consumed alone. Now, I’m not saying that this is a bad thing; but it can result in health complications and unnecessary weight gain of course. Then, on the other end of the spectrum we have people in North America who either eat out 3-4 times a day, or do not eat at all due to their busy schedules. And those who maybe know TOO much when it comes to a healthy diet and find themselves feeling restricted often or those who spend too much time calculating calories instead of the quality of the food.
Can you see a pattern here? There is ZERO BALANCE. Yes, I went there… the ‘B’ word that gets thrown around more than often exists in the food world as well. There is a reason why though! It is SO important to have balance in every single aspect of our life. Aside from having self-awareness, and the basic nutrition knowledge, having balance is crucial to our health as well. Food is a big part of our society today. It brings us together! You may be a foodie who simply LOVES to try new things, someone who likes to go out and be social, or someone who is constantly in meetings at restaurants. Personally, I love to sit down and share a great meal with great company. Something about it just makes the connection much more meaningful! And I have learnt that there is nothing wrong with that. For a while I convinced myself that eating for pleasure was wrong, and it could hold me back from growing spiritually. But I realized that eating too can be a spiritual experience because I am enjoying the things our Creator has gifted us! As long as there is respect, and once again – BALANCE – there is simply nothing wrong with it.
Where do you fall in between all of those examples? Do you need to develop more self-awareness to tune into your body’s needs? Or do you need to do some research to learn what types of foods you should be eating more of? Even if you are not over-weight, you could still be lacking energy, strength, happiness, LIFE – so take some time to reflect and find what is missing.
In the coming weeks I will be sharing ways to tune into your body with some basic nutrition tips to help you find YOUR balance and live in FULL health!
Hope you beauties enjoy the rest of your Sunday, I will catch you in the next one!
With Light & Love,
